Happy Founders’ Day to the extraordinary women of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated!
On November 12, 1922, seven visionary educators—Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin, and Cubena McClure—came together at Butler University in Indianapolis to charter a sisterhood destined to change the world. They founded Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, rooted in the ideals of scholarship, service, and sisterhood.
From its early focus on education to its transformation into a global organization, Sigma Gamma Rho expanded its mission to uplift women and communities of all walks of life. With more than 500 chapters worldwide, the sorority’s reach now spans the U.S., Canada, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Germany, South Korea, and the UAE.
At the heart of Sigma Gamma Rho lies its slogan: “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” Through decades of service, the “Pretty Poodles” have mobilized initiatives that span education, health awareness, leadership development, and international outreach. Whether through scholarship funds, community literacy programs, or global missions, their impact is profound and sustained.
Today, women of Sigma Gamma Rho continue to lead with excellence — as professionals, as advocates, and as change-makers.
